The festival celebrates Lord Ganesha as the God of New Beginnings and the Remover of Obstacle and is observed throughout India, especially in the states of Maharashtra, Telangana, Gujarat and Chhattisgarh, and is usually celebrated privately at home in states of Goa, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.
This festival is celebrated in many countries other than India. Some of them are:

2) Fiji
3) Trinidad
4) Suriname
5) Mauritius, etc.
It is also celebrated by the Indian people living in the USA, Australia and United Kingdom.
Way of Celebration:
At home, the festival preparation includes purchases such as puja items or accessories a few days in advance and booking the ganesh murti as early as a month beforehand. The murti (idol) is brought home either a day before or on the day of the ganesh chaturthi itself. Families decorate a small, clean portion of the house with flowers and other colourful items before placing the idol.
At public places, Local Mandapas ( decorated tent like structures) are usually funded either from donations by local residents or hosted by businesses or community organizations. The making of the Murti in Maharashtra usually begins with "Padya pooja" or worshipping the feet of Lord Ganesh.
Duration of Festival:
The idol of Lord Ganesha is placed in the home for durations like 1.5 day, 3 days, 5 days, 7 days, 11days, and 21 days.
It is mostly celebrated in the months of August and September.
Finally, on the last day of the festival, people do the 'visarjan' ( submerging) of the idol in water bodies like lakes, sea, rivers or a well. People give farewell to 'Bappa' by requesting him to return early on the next year.
